Short Bio

Konstantina Zompola (b. 1997, Athens, Greece) is a visual artist and an art educator currently based in Greece. She holds an integrated BA from the School of Fine Arts at the University of Ioannina (Greece) and an MFA in Visual Arts and Landscape: Visual Approach to Natural and Urban Space from the School of Fine Arts in Florina (Greece).

Her painting practice centers on the exploration of landscape as an embodied field of experience, memory, and transformation. Rooted in the lived topographies of Northern Greece (Prespa region) and the open horizons of the northern Netherlands, her work uses walking and observation to create in-between spaces where the real and imaginary merge. Natural and organic forms, human presence, and water coexist in layered, expressive compositions. Konstantina has presented solo exhibitions in Greece and the Netherlands, including at METS Arts Centre in Athens and Y2 Art Space in Groningen, and her work has been shown in group exhibitions across Greece and Europe.

Artist Statement

My painting practice begins with the landscapes that I have walked through and experienced. Walking and close observation are essential parts of my process, allowing me to collect impressions, forms, and fragments that later become the starting point for painting. Rather than representing a specific place, I create in-between spaces where reality and imagination overlap, and where the landscape is transformed through the act of painting.

As I work, elements from the natural environment like, water, reeds, trees, as well as human and animal figures gradually emerge. These forms do not belong to a fixed narrative or a particular location. Instead, they coexist within open, shifting compositions where different places, memories, and experiences merge into new visual worlds.

My research is rooted in the landscapes of the Northern Greece (Prespa region at Florina) and has expanded through my experience of the landscapes of the northern Netherlands. These environments have shaped the way I understand landscape, not as something to be documented, but as something lived, remembered, and continuously reimagined. The paintings do not depict these places directly but they transform them into spaces that exist between reality and imagination. Through painting, I explore the relationship between the body and the landscape and how moving through a place influences perception and memory. My work is an ongoing investigation into the spaces that emerge between the visible and the imagined, where landscape remains in a constant state of transformation.
